
The Opelousas City Court was established by the State of Louisiana. It is the judicial branch of the City of Opelousas government and has jurisdiction over its incorporated city limits and Ward One of St. Landry Parish.
The court presides over Civil, Criminal, Traffic, and Juvenile cases. Civil claims include personal injury, contract, and landlord-tenant cases up to $25,000. It also has criminal jurisdiction over misdemeanors that are offenses generally punishable by a fine of not more than $500 and/or a jail term of not more than six months. All fines, costs, and forfeitures levied by the judges are collected by the Clerkâs Office
The Opelousas City Court is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., except on legal holidays. The court shall hear cases in accordance with a schedule and routine as determined by the Judge. Court begins at 8:30 a.m., or as the Judge determines.
